Right to Work – protecting you and your workers

If you are responsible for employing people you are almost certainly aware of the need to check documentation before taking them on. Fines imposed on UK companies in the first quarter of this year alone were in excess of £7 million. As an employer, you must check that a job applicant is allowed to work for you in the UK before you employ them.

Case Study – Tesco

In 2012 Britainʼs biggest supermarket chain Tesco was fined £115,000 for breaches involving 23 workers.
According to the Government’s own figures*, the penalties imposed on UK businesses in the first quarter of 2018 were £7.64 million.

The total number of illegal workers found in the period was 637.

You must protect your organisation from the possibility of these penalties but often smaller businesses may not be aware of their legal obligations.Big business are not exempt from failure to comply either. Following the Tesco case, a UK Border Agency spokesman said: “This fine shows that we will not hesitate to take action against employers that break the rules.

“Illegal working has a serious impact on our communities and where we have intelligence to suggest it is taking place we will take action, as we have done in this case.”
